1st and 2nd of 4 sessions dedicated to those who would like to work towards the CLAS Foundation, Intermediate or Advanced Diploma with a view to a summer 2019 submission.

Also known as the Ladder of Progress

The sessions are taught by Honoured Fellows of CLAS who are also assessors of the National Diploma or the Moderator, so they have great experience of the standard and what is required.

Session summaries:

  1. Colour  etc (always a fun one to get the course going) – Mary
  2. More than the Basics; Scripts and Analysis – Gaynor

It’s never too early for potential students to be practising their scripts, assembling possible texts, especially bearing in mind word quantity needed for the various levels, and trying out some layouts.

For module A, try to get a copy of Stan Knight’s Historical Scripts as your ‘Bible’, and start assembling examples of the various scripts in calligraphic usage, historical and contemporary (check out exhibition catalogues, The Edge past copies and the internet).

Session 1 – COLOUR INTHE PEN AND BACKGROUNDS, TEXTURES AND SURFACES – Mary Noble
Saturday 27 October 2018

A more advanced use of colour is expected at these levels, and this will be covered in this session. Using textures to good effect, creating interesting writing surfaces and backgrounds are all aspects which can enhance your calligraphy. We shall also look at the Modules to answer any queries.

Session 2 – MORE THAN THE BASICS; SCRIPTS AND ANALYSIS – Gaynor Goffe
Saturday 24 November 2018

This session will concentrate on writing styles. One basic hand is required for the Foundation level of the National Diploma in Calligraphy – Foundational or Italic, more are required for the other levels. This will be a useful session for all, even for those with a good grasp of a variety of writing styles as those basic hands will be tuned up and others will be considered. How to analyse a hand for Module A will be discussed.
