Large Italics in Automatic Pen

Saturday 3rd August 2019 (10am – 4pm)
Tutor: Rachel Yallop

Suitable for: All levels

Writing letters at a large size increases calligraphic confidence and enhances hand skills.  Using the larger sizes of Automatic pens is a great way to achieve this.  In this class we will: practice a rhythmic texture of lines as a way into making letters; look at pen manipulation and how to make an easy transition between thick and thin strokes; develop a condensed sharpened Italic style; look at ways of breaking the rhythm to create tension between letters or within a word or larger piece; look at style variations such as using weight in a limited way

You will need:

  • Lots of paper for practice, eg. layout or lining paper
  • Cartridge paper or textured paper for more finished pieces.
  • Automatic pens in the larger sizes, eg. 4, 5 and/or 6
  • Free flowing ink such as Pelican 4001
  • Non-waterproof coloured inks if desires (or Rachel’s signature colours of black, white, and red)
