The Cinque Ports Scribesfor Calligraphy in Kent and E.SussexWelcome to the web-site of The Cinque Ports Scribes! Our society was formed in 1992 to cater for those who have a practical interest in Calligraphy and the art of Lettering and Illumination and who live in the South East of England, particularly Kent. The group are affiliated to the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society (CLAS) and are members of the Society for Scribes and Illuminators (SSI) and the Edward Johnston Foundation (EJF).The group continues to flourish having grown to nearly ninety members and covers all abilities from beginner to professional. In the past we have held exhibitions at Canterbury Cathedral, Dover Museum, Ashford and Folkestone Libraries, and King’s School, Canterbury and hosted, to general acclaim, the 2005 CLAS Regional Day. During the year the society holds workshops in Hastingleigh, near Wye, Kent led by professional calligraphers, covering a wide range of topics in calligraphy and related areas of interest. We also hold more informal workshops led by committee members and organise visits to museums and exhibitions of interest on an occasional basis. We publish a twice-yearly A4 Newsletter covering a broad range of calligraphy-related topics and have an extensive library, including slides, videos, DVDs and archive material, for the use of members. A number of our members are willing to take commissions, please contact e-mail below for further information. We welcome membership from anyone with an interest in Calligraphy and the Lettering Arts, whatever their level of ability. The annual subscription is currently £10.00 per year. There is no minimum requirement, you may join in as many or as few activities as you wish. If you wish to join us or ask for further details please e-mail:
